The power of multi-point borehole extensometers

At Terra Monitoring, we take pride in delivering world-class geotechnical instrumentation solutions that support safe, efficient, and informed decision-making in critical infrastructure projects. We specialise in providing reliable monitoring systems that give our clients the data they need to protect people and assets, and to ensure the long-term success of their projects.

Unlocking Subsurface Insights with the MPBX System
One of our key solutions is the Multi-Point Borehole Extensometer (MPBX), a precision instrument designed to track ground and rock mass movement beneath the surface.  This powerful tool is crucial for projects involving ground stability, such as tunnel construction, deep excavations, and the monitoring of dams and large structures. By installing multiple anchors at different depths within a single borehole, the MPBX provides a comprehensive, multi-layered view of subsurface deformation, helping to identify potential issues before they become critical.

How the MPBX System Works
The MPBX system operates by measuring the relative distance between its anchors and a reference point at the borehole collar. This allows us to accurately track movement across various soil and rock strata. For consistent, reliable data, we often pair the extensometer with automated datalogging systems like the Geosense Wi-SOS 480, which can be programmed to log readings at required intervals. This automated approach ensures accuracy and consistency without the need for manual measurements, allowing project managers to monitor ground behaviour in real-time.

Applications for Bridges and Overhead Rail Systems
Imagine a major bridge or overhead railway system. The ground and foundations supporting these structures are under constant stress from traffic loads and environmental factors. An MPBX system can be strategically installed in boreholes near the support pillars to:
  • Track Subsurface Movement: Monitor for subtle ground settlement or uplift that could compromise the integrity of the structure.
  • Provide Early Warnings: Detect and alert engineers to abnormal ground deformation, providing a critical early warning of potential instability.
  • Support Long-Term Stability: Generate a continuous record of ground behaviour, which is essential for informed maintenance and long-term asset management.
By using precision instruments like the MPBX combined with dependable data collection, we enable our clients to make safer, more informed, and cost-effective decisions—ensuring the long-term success of critical infrastructure.
