2025 In Review
As we say goodbye to a busy and successful year, we reflect on some challenging projects:
Geomech Africa delivered an exceptional geotechnical investigation for the tailings facility at the Tronox Fairbreeze Mine in KZN. This project successfully navigated the unique and critical requirements of technical and precise work on tailings facilities.
Using advanced CPTu testing and a custom-developed, innovative approach, the team optimised operational efficiency and costs for the client. The extensive programme included the installation of 22 Vibrating Wire Piezometers (VWPs) and gathered over 750 metres of CPTu data. Crucially, the project set a new internal record by conducting dissipations continuously for multiple days, demonstrating the team's problem-solving capabilities.

Earlier this year, Geomech Africa successfully executed a complex geotechnical investigation for the N2 Umgeni Interchange, involving a massive scope of 4709 metres drilled across 228 boreholes and extensive in-situ testing. A critical challenge overcome by the team was working safely and precisely in high-traffic areas, requiring significant traffic accommodation and safety protocols to mitigate risk. GeoGroup demonstrated its commitment to local empowerment, reinvesting in the community. This project showcases GeoGroup's ability to deliver high-quality, large-scale technical work while navigating major logistical hurdles and fostering community growth.

Ensuring the safety and longevity of critical infrastructure requires specialised monitoring, particularly when working in tunnels and underground structures. This year, Terra Monitoring, a leading geotechnical instrumentation provider, delivered an advanced solution for continuous pore water pressure assessment. The success leveraged the accuracy of slimline Vibrating Wire Piezometers (VWPs), which offer superior reliability and easier installation in confined spaces. This project showcases Terra Monitoring's expertise in implementing cutting-edge technology to automate readings and provide engineers with real-time data, enabling informed decisions on stability, ground movement, and construction optimisation.

This year, Geomechanics demonstrated its capacity for cross-border projects by successfully executing a critical geotechnical investigation for a new tailings facility, located 60 kilometres north of Lilongwe, Malawi. Working in this remote location required rapid mobilisation and exceptional adaptability from the team. Using the powerful 20-ton Colossal CPT rig, Geomechanics completed over 500 metres of CPTu testing across 41 positions, navigating heavily overgrown bush and challenging ground conditions. Through resourceful coordination with local teams, we ensured continuous testing and delivered a comprehensive, high-quality dataset critical for the tailings facility design.
