The recent tailings dam failure at the Jagersfontein Diamond mine, in the Free State Province of South Africa, was yet another eye-opener globally as to why the safety at waste facilities should be taken more seriously. In 2019, we also witnessed the catastrophic failure of the tailings dam at the Córrego do Feijão iron ore mine, 9 kilometres east of Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The question always arises whether or not this could have been prevented or not. Having updated and accurate data available at regular intervals could have been the determining factor between a healthy waste facility versus possible devastation.
Fortunately, many technical advances have been made in the field of monitoring equipment and practices over the past 2 decades.
